Our Chairman, Jim Bullard, announces closure of Second Chance

Second Chance chairman, Jim Bullard, released the following notice of action taken at our recent board meeting:

Date: 04/09/17
To: Transplant Recipients & Caregivers

On behalf of the Board of Directors, it has been a pleasure being a part of the Second Chance Team. This team includes; the Medical team, Heart transplant recipients, and CaJim Bullardregivers. As we all are aware, the mission of this team has been and will always be lifesaving. Personally, if it was not for this team, I would have left this world years ago. Regardless of the decision recently made regarding the Second Chance organization, I am committed to give time to those in need of it.

Following our deep concerns and discussions over multiyear declining Celebration of Life attendance with minimal response to this year’s event, the board decided to cancel the May 7th annual dinner event. Advance payments for ads and reservations are being refunded, while the already committed cash raffle will proceed with the drawing as scheduled for May 7th.

With the loss of that patient grant fund support revenue and the closing of the Hahnemann Hospital heart transplant program, Second Chance chapter activity is down from four to one active chapter still having meetings. Even that chapter engaged in two major events a year vs. our original 11 support group events per year program. It became clear that we are no longer able to effectively carry out our grant program and patient support mission.

After being operational for 30 years, the board faced the very painful but inevitable decision to close the Second Chance Heart Transplant support Group, Inc. effective June 30, 2017. Per the dissolution provision of the by-laws, the board directed that the remaining assets of the organization will be donated to the Gift of Life Transplant Family House, to help transplant patients and families that stay there even when they cannot afford the daily charges.

This move is yet another sign of the changing times where generational needs of society are not coming out to meetings as in the past, thus Second Chance is following the example of many other groups who have faced similar tough decisions for reasons of dwindling financials and membership engagement.

Please reach out to me if you need additional information.

Sincerely,

Jim Bullard
